For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
We have seen that everything God does is done by faith. All of our interactions with Him will be by faith. It will not be possible for us to truly understand Him and His Word if we do not understand faith.
It is important to study the Word of God. Some people have even become proficient scholars of the original languages. These things can benefit us but they are not the most important for our spiritual growth.
If we study for intellectual knowledge without faith there will be very minimal spiritual benefit. Our head knowledge will grow but that will not help us grow in our relationship with God.
There are people who spend hours listening to teaching and preaching online and in services. If they do not mix faith with this activity it will only result in increased head knowledge.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
If we learn to speak the Word of God with faith our words will be filled with the power of God.
Paul said that we move from “faith to faith”. We have seen in previous posts that faith is not a theological position, group, or church body. Faith is how God has always functioned.
Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children.
We are to imitate God as His children. This will require us to learn to operate by faith.
Learning to operate by faith is learning to operate and function like our creator. We will not necessarily operate at the level of faith He does but we can learn to operate in His faith.
God does not function like the majority of people. He does not operate by the five physical senses and is not moved by what He sees.
Our heavenly Father operates and functions by overcoming faith. There is no better way to live. He has commanded us to live just like Him.
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
This is a phrase we will see repeated over and over. If you are a Christian, you are the just. Faith is the required lifestyle for a Christian!
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:7
We walk by faith one step at a time. I believe that this is what Paul was referencing in the phrase “from faith to faith”.
And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
We are called to follow the “steps of that faith” Abraham walked. His life is the preeminent example of walking by faith. He did not know where God was taking Him when he left his hometown. This required him to trust God.
Abraham left home and took the first step. This led to the next which led to the next. I encourage you to go back and read the account of his life in the Old Testament.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Paul tells us that the life we live must be lived by the “faith of the Son of God”.
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
Have you ever wondered what Paul meant when he said he did “not frustrate the grace of God”? I believe that this is connected to his previous statements about living by faith. This would mean that a person who is not living by faith would “frustrate the grace of God”.
We do not live by the Old Testament Law or lists of rules telling us what is right or wrong. The Holy Spirit dwells in our spirits and He shows us what is right or wrong. If we are following His leading at every step we will do what is right.
We are going to pick up with this discussion in the next post.
