The book of Acts clearly shows that the early Church had an awareness of the Holy Spirit that seems to be missing today. Christians recognized Him as God and reverently looked to Him for help in all areas of life. They were conscious of His presence within their spirits and looked to Him for direction, guidance, and leadership.
You can live with an equal level of awareness today. In Romans, we have seen that sons and daughters of God are to be led by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14). One huge difference between Christians and non-Christians is having the third person of the Godhead dwelling in our spirits. He is with us every moment of every day and will never leave us.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (John 16:7)
Jesus told His disciples that it would be better for them to have Him leave. We have discussed this statement previously and seen that we have today is better. Jesus was “with” the disciples, but the Holy Spirit is “in” the spirit of every Christian.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (John 14:16 -17)
Jesus was the first “Comforter.”
The Holy Spirit is the second “Comforter.” He dwells within our spirit and is standing by to assist if you turn to Him and ask for help.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. (2 Corinthians 13:14)
All three members of the Godhead desire to develop an intimate relationship with you, and each one desires to spend time with you!
You most likely have a desire for God to be more real in your life if you’ve read to this point. We all want this, and it is required for you to develop an intimate relationship with His Spirit. You will find that obedience is critical, and as you obey the leadings of the Spirit, God will, in turn become much more real to you.
God will take an active role in manifesting Himself to you when you purposely set your heart to seek Him. On the other hand, if you ignore Him and push Him away, He will not force Himself into your life.
Any amount of tolerated disobedience will cause you to become spiritually dull. You will find yourself becoming less and less aware of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit within you. Many Christians have no spiritual awareness simply because they have resisted the Spirit’s leadings intentionally or unintentionally.
You are the one who determines your level of sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. You may have tolerated disobedience in the past but will find Him waiting if you will repent and turn to Him.
Quench not the Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 5:19)
The Holy Spirit leads us internally through our spirit. You need to be careful about yielding to the temptation of looking for external signs or fleeces to determine how He is directing you.
Ove r the years I’ve heard many Christians talk about Gideon and his fleece through which God led him. Many have followed this pattern and ended up in a place outside of the will of God. Gideon did not have the Spirit within him like you and I do.
Some people have had limited success with external leadings. You may have heard someone talk about times when God led them through a fleece or some other outward sign. The reason for this is that they were not spiritually mature enough to understand how to recognize the Spirit’s leadings within them, and so God had mercy on them.
Satan is operating in the earth. He can manipulate things externally, and you must not let yourself look outward where he can manipulate you. Christians are to be led internally by the Spirit of God and by nothing else!
