And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (John 14:16 – 17)
The word translated “Comforter” is “parakletos” which means “called to one’s aid.”
The word translated “another” is “allos” which means “another of the same kind” or “another of a similar type.”
Jesus was the disciples original “Comforter.”
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (John 16:7)
Can you imagine the disciple’s confusion when Jesus told them that He was leaving? They had traveled with Him for three-plus years, and they were expecting Him to set up His kingdom on the earth.
Jesus told them that it would be better if He left them. What could be better than traveling with the Messiah, sitting in His miracle services, and experiencing the miraculous power of God? The answer to this question is to have His Spirit dwelling in your spirit.
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (John 14:17)
Dr. Kenneth E. Hagin used to say that we should become more God inside minded. He encouraged us to become more aware of the Holy Spirit’s presence within our spirit in this statement.
Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirit would be with them and in them. Unfortunately, far too many Christians are unaware of this truth.
You can live with an awareness of His presence. Doing so will require you to change your focus from the external to the person dwelling in your Spirit. The Holy Spirit should be just as real to you as any other person with whom you come in contact each day.
You would probably be upset if I accused you of shutting God out of your life or of ignoring Him. Without realizing it, many Christians do exactly this every day. The Holy Spirit tries to talk to us, and He tries to lead us each day, but most are not listening.
Many people spend so much time looking for the “spectacular” manifestations of the Spirit that they end up missing the work of the Holy Spirit that is occurring within them. You do not need goosebumps, audible voices, or hot flashes to know He is with you!
I have heard Christians talk about putting out a fleece to receive God’s direction. They reference the account of Gideon that talks about this subject. While it is true that God did lead him through a fleece, it is also true that Gideon did not have the Holy Spirit dwelling in his spirit. He had to look externally to determine how God was leading Him.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (Romans 8:14)
You and I live in a different covenant than Gideon or other Old Testament saints. We are to be internally led by the Holy Spirit!
I have overheard people ask other people what they think they should do and have been guilty of asking the same question myself. While it is not necessarily wrong to receive counsel from others, we are not led by anyone but the Holy Spirit.
I’ve seen people’s lives messed up by following the counsel of family members, ministers, and friends. Their fault is theirs alone because they looked outward for guidance instead of inward to the Holy Spirit. They are to blame, but we also must remember that regardless of where the blame lies, the reason is usually ignorance about the Holy Spirit’s presence within them.
You need to trust the Holy Spirit’s leadings. If someone else shares anything they say is from Him, it will confirm what you have already received from Him.
I have seen young Christians let other people talk them out of what the Holy Spirit has led them to do. You can trust yourself to hear the Spirit for yourself!
New Testament Christians are not to be led by apostles or prophets. You are to be led by the Holy Spirit and only the Holy Spirit!
