We are going to start discussing the authority available to every Christian as it pertains to divine healing. Many people desire to be healed but are not actively resisting the sickness. I believe a reason lies in our overall lack of understanding regarding the authority conferred in the Name of Jesus.
It is not without question that Jesus had absolute authority over demonic powers. He spoke to winds, diseases, and demons. Each one responded. We see in Matthew 10:1 that Jesus conferred this authority to His disciples.
And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. (Matthew 10:1)
The Covid pandemic has swept the globe in the past year at the time I’m writing. Christians seem to be reacting no differently than unbelievers fearing the disease. We need to understand that Jesus’ authority over “all manner of sickness” and “all manner of disease” extends to Covid! There will never be a disease introduced into this world that the power resident in the spirit of every Christian cannot overcome!
Some people who read this may counter by saying Jesus conferred this authority on His disciples. Many of these will argue that the time apostles are over, so this does not apply to the Church today. There are still apostles today, but regardless, this is not limited to that single group. Jesus gave authority to all believers.
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (Matthew 28:18)
God had authority in heaven but not on the earth before Jesus’ entrance into the world. He had delegated this to humanity, who then turned it over to Satan in the fall. The fall of man is the reason there is sickness and disease. Sin opened the door that gave Satan an inroad into this world’s system, and this is why we have wars, rising crime rates, and all the other horrible things happening.
God gave us authority over this earth and our own lives. The reason things are in the shape they are in today is because people are yielding to Satan and allowing him to control their lives. This world operates according to a system polluted by humanity’s sinful nature.
Jesus came as a physical man and took back the authority turned over to Satan at the fall of man. He was able to tell the disciples that “all authority in heaven and earth” had been given to him as a result.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matthew 28:19 – 20)
Jesus first told His disciples that “all” authority in heaven and earth had been given to Him. He then told His disciples to “go.” The word “therefore” is a connector joining His command to “go” with the previous statement regarding the authority He walked in. I It links the last two verses to the previous one.
Jesus transferred His authority to all of His disciples. Verses 19 and 20 are commonly referred to as the Great Commission as a result. There is an almost unanimous agreement among Christian denominations that this statement made by Jesus should be considered our marching orders. This mandate not reserved just for the early apostles.
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. (Mark 16:15 – 20)
Jesus conferred His authority and power on the disciples. I have heard ministers their congregations that this passage only referred to the original twelve disciples. Why did Jesus say that these signs would follow “them that believe’ if this were true?
Did you know that God does not have a set of physical hands? He is spirit, and therefore believers are called to lay hands on the sick expecting that they would recover. The healing power of God is released when we lay hands on the sick!
Prayer will not “recover” people without their being an associated action. We must act on Jesus’ instructions if we see the healing power of God manifest in more significant measures today!
