2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:2
Everything that has been done in this world by God was done through the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit of God is the agent that executes the Word of God in our lives! A relationship with Him is therefore essential to our being able to walk the Christian life and fulfill the plan of God.
Overall the Church is not emphasizing the Holy Spirit or His ministry today. This is evidenced especially by the fact that if a call is given to receive His baptism in any “spirit-filled” church will usually result in the majority of attendees flooding the altar.
I find it very sad that people who are born again can live their entire lives without experiencing the joys of a relationship with the Holy Spirit. He was sent to walk with us through each step of life and it grieves me to think of how many will never experience the joy of fellowshipping with Him.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
John 16:13
The Holy Spirit will show us things that are coming our way if we will listen to Him. I think back to a time when I was scheduled to minister at a mission. Time had gotten away from me and I was hurrying due to being late.
Our neighborhood at the time had a traffic light at the entrance as you were entering a four-lane road. My destination was to the right but there was an urge to turn left. Following this urge would make me even later as it required going in the opposite direction of my destination.
I had spent enough time with the Holy Spirit at that time to recognize this urge was from Him and so moved into the left turn lane just as the light turned green. My lane had a left turn arrow which was red so I waited.
The car behind me entered the right turn lane, made the turn, and was hit by a car that ran the red light. If I had ignored the “urge” to turn left, my car would have been the one that was hit. I had been protected and the person behind me would have been equally protected if they had known to listen to His promptings as well.
We can be led by the Holy Spirit in every aspect of life. He will guide us in our studies, our work, and our home lives. If we will take the time to meditate in God’s Word and spend time with Him, He will impart wisdom to our hearts.
My wife and I recently took a vacation in the mountains of north Georgia. There were some roads that were very curvy which made visibility beyond the car in front of us very difficult. We got behind several slow drivers and could not pass even though it was legal in the area we were driving.
I think back to those experiences following the slow drivers and wonder what it would have been like if we had someone in a plane flying above us. The pilot could see what was ahead and potentially communicate it to us so that we would have known whether or not it was safe to pass the car in front of us.
10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.
Isaiah 46:10
The Holy Spirit has a perspective that enables Him to see the end from the beginning. He is essentially the pilot in my illustration who is flying above us that can see what is ahead of us. We have an open communication channel with Him but few of us will ever use it unless we are experiencing some form of tragedy.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Romans 8:14
With the Holy Spirit guiding us there is no reason why any Christian should be experiencing the difficulties so many do. A lot of people have not been taught these things and just do not understand anything about Him.
The Bible talks about the Holy Spirit from Genesis to Revelation. It amazes me to look back and see how I missed this in my early years. Unfortunately, the majority of Christians are just like I was and as a result are totally unaware of His presence in their lives.
Acts mention the Holy Spirit in nearly every chapter. He was an essential part of the Christian life for the early Christians. There is just no way to read the book of Acts and come to a different conclusion!
Religious tradition has diluted the Holy Spirit’s presence in the Christian life. This has resulted in a decreased awareness of Him which has, in turn, limited His ability to work in our lives.
I believe that one of the most dangerous religious teachings of our day is that a person receives everything that is available from the Holy Spirit when they become a Christian. This has led to the belief that there is nothing more to receive and therefore the position a person is in at salvation will be as good as it will get. There is so much more that is available and discovering what is available to us is the goal of this study.
