Fundamentals Of Victorious Christian Living Part 14

For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
1 Corinthians 14:14

We have been discussing the three parts of our being. God created us living spirits, we have a soul, and live in a body. Paul tells us that it is our spirit who is praying when we pray in an “unknown tongue”.

The born again part of a Christian’s being is their spirit. It is where the “unction” resides which John referenced in 1 John 2:20. When we pray in tongues it is our spirit that is praying.

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
1 Corinthians 14:2

John tells us that we have an “unction” and know all things. When we spend time praying in tongues, we pray out what may seem like a mystery to our minds but is known in our spirit.

Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
1 Corinthians 14:13

All of us have found ourselves in situations where we just did not know what to do. God interacts with us in the spirit and the answer will always be available. We draw those answers up from the spiritual realm by praying in tongues. This is similar to drawing water from a well. The water is in the well but will not provide benefit until a bucket is lowered to draw out the water. Our tongue yielded to the Holy Spirit is the bucket with which we draw out the “mysteries” of the spirit that are not known to our natural mind.

If we ask God to reveal the interpretation of what we’re praying, He will. It will take time for us to renew our minds to these truths. When we pray in tongues it may feel like we are speaking gibberish.

It will take time spent meditating on the truths of God’s Word for us to move beyond fear and embarrassment of the unknown to faith. If we will get into faith we will find God providing us the interpretation of what we are praying in tongues.

There is not a single situation any of us will ever face that God cannot provide the answer for. It does not matter if the problem is physical, financial, or mental. The answer to every situation we will face has been placed in our spirit. The Holy Spirit will provide utterance to draw out those answers if we will yield ourselves to Him in prayer.

So that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 5:21

Paul tells us that grace reigns in our lives “through righteousness”. This will not happen if we do not first develop a revelation of our position in Christ Jesus.

But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Romans 8:11

We cannot see “righteousness” and may only see sickness, lack or bondage if our focus is outward. Paul tells us that the same Spirit that was involved in Jesus’ resurrection is living inside of our spirits. He is with us regardless of what our outward physical appearance may be.

The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.
Ephesians 1:18

Paul prayed that his readers’ spiritual eyes would be enlightened. He desired for them to “know” the riches of their calling and the glory that was their inheritance. I desire the same for you and often pray this prayer over our readers.

If you are a Christian, you have the same power that raised Jesus from the dead living in your born again human spirit! This is the revelation that is missing for far too many Christians.

I have heard people talk about bombarding the gates of heaven. They say we have to pray a hole in the heavens in order for our prayers to be heard. The Holy Spirit is dwelling in our hearts. Spiritually we have been raised with Jesus and seated with Him in spiritual places (Ephesians 2). Our religious systems are based on a misunderstanding of the Christians position in Christ!

Many years ago I sat under intercessory prayer teachers that are highly regarded to this day. They told us that the first step in intercession is to successfully punch a hole in the heavens to allow our prayers to reach the throne of God. Over time I’ve realized how wrong this teaching is. I really believe that the first step in intercession is our willingness to die to self and become living sacrifices (Romans 12:1-2).

God is in our spirit through the person of the Holy Spirit. We do not need to punch a hole in the heavens for Him to hear us! He dwells in us and that is the revelation we need to develop in.

There are some churches that teach ministers must stand between us and God in intercession. This is an Old Testament mindset because Jesus is our only High Priest today. He is the only one who stands before God to intercede on our behalf.

So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
Hebrews 9:28

We are righteous in Christ Jesus now! This is not something we are working to attain to the victorious life will never be attained until we develop in this revelation. It is the foundational revelation that will unlock the ability of grace to reign in our lives.
