Fundamentals of Christian Growth Part 13

We have seen that the Kingdom of God operates according to the principle of seedtime and harvest. The Word must be planted in our hearts and given time to grow. This is no different from the process a natural seed goes through to produce a natural harvest.

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
1 Peter 1:23

Jesus described four different types of ground in Mark 4. Each represents a different condition of the heart. Peter tells us that the Word of God is an incorruptible seed. Natural seeds can go bad but this cannot happen with “Word” seeds.

The variance between each type of ground is not caused by the seed being planted in it. It is the heart in which God’s Word is planted in that determines how the seed will be able to grow.

God’s seed has the exact same potential to produce harvest for every person who will ever live. There are Christians who believe that God’s Word will not work for them the same as it will for someone else. They are wrong. It will work regardless of anything we have done.

Far too many Christians have accepted their situation. They do not expect anything more from life and have no vision or concept of God’s plan. God has a plan for them that can only be accessed through His Word.

Ground provides a habitat for seed to grow. It does not determine what harvest will be produced by seed planted in it. We will experience harvest if we will continue to plant God’s Word in our hearts and then nurture it in prayer.

The Word of God will literally transform our lives if we will plant it and give it time to grow. I was a complete failure in life before finding out these truths. My only natural ability seemed to be failure! God changed that through His Word when I stopped making excuses and started to plant by committing myself to prayer and meditation in the Word.

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all the stars by the breath of His mouth.
Psalms 33:6

God spoke everything into existence. This is hard to grasp. He has given us His words that had enough power to speak the sun, moon, and stars into existence. We can take that Word, plant it in our hearts, and expect it to release His creative power in our lives!

For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
Hebrews 4:2

God’s Word must be mixed with faith to release its power in our lives.

God’s Word is incorruptible seed. There is no need that it cannot solve but we must plant it in our hearts and mix it with faith.

Many Christians are praying for harvest with no seed in the ground. They become discouraged about a seeming lack of results. There can be no harvest without seed being first planted in either the natural or spiritual realms.

If we do not spend time meditating in the Word on a daily basis we will not have revelation of it’s truths. We will have nothing to stand on and our faith will not be based in God.

Christians try to believe God separate from His Word. He sometimes has mercy and provides but His kingdom operates according to the law of seedtime and harvest. We do not have to live in a state of dependency on His mercy when it comes to receiving His blessings. I am not discounting mercy of course. He has given us His Word, provided for all we will ever need through the knowledge of it (2 Peter 1:3), and only asks that we spend time planting it in our hearts.

And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
Mark 4:15

This is the first of four types of ground Jesus described.

18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
Matthew 13:18-19

Matthew provides us an account of the same parable. He provides some detail that is different than that provided by Mark.

Both accounts tell us that Satan comes immediately to steal the Word when we hear it. Matthew tells us though that he specifically targets those who hear and do not understand what they are hearing. The only person Satan will have complete access to in regards to hearing the Word are those who just do not understand it.

I believe that understanding is the first step we take towards seeing the Word of God working in our lives. This is also a major step forward in our Christian growth. Satan has stolen the Word from many Christians simply because they did not understand the Word of God.
