We have seen that men and women are sinners by nature as a result of Adam’s sin. The sin actions are a consequence of this nature which we were all born with.
Paul tells us five separate times in Romans 5 that we were born sinners with a sin nature. This is something we inherited. He does not stop though with our sin nature but tells us that Christians are made righteous in the same way that they were made sinners!
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
A person becomes “born again” when they accept Jesus. This is the moment they begin to be called “Christian”. It is also the moment that they exchange their sin nature for God’s righteousness.
Religious tradition tells us we must work to gain standing before God. The Bible tells us that we have been made righteous at the moment we accepted Jesus. Our works will change as a result of our acceptance of Christ and time spent meditating in His Word but they do not determine our status before God.
15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.
17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Living a victorious Christian life requires an understanding of our position in Christ. Righteousness is a free gift provided in redemption. It enables us to stand without any hesitation before God knowing we are accepted as a result of Jesus.
Adam’s “disobedience” resulted in every human being through all time being made sinners.
Jesus’ “obedience” changed things and opened the door from every human being to be made righteous.
We did not deserve unrighteousness and we do not deserve righteousness. Both are inherited at birth – one through natural birth and the other through spiritual birth.
A Christian who does not have an understanding of their right standing before God will never experience the victorious life planned for them by God. Grace will not be able to reign in their lives. They will not experience eternal life as defined by Jesus.
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Eternal life leads to an intimate relationship with God in this life. If we do not understand the foundational message of our right standing, we will never develop a truly personal relationship with God.
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.
There are many associated benefits to be found in serving God. These are missed by most Christians due to a lack of revelation in the area of righteousness.
Christians for the most part do not have a revelation of righteousness. Most view their acceptance by God as something dependent on their actions. This is an Old Testament mindset that Jesus came to set us free from.
The righteousness offered in Christ is a faith righteousness. When a person puts their faith in Him, they are made the righteousness of God.
