Fundamentals of Christian Growth Part 10

We have seen that the Word of God is key to Christian Growth. It is the vehicle through which God will impart provision for everything we need in life.

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Proverbs 23:7

God imparts His revelation knowledge to us through His Word. If we allow our minds to be renewed by Scripture we will begin to reflect His glory and find freedom from things that previously bound us.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Romans 1:16

Paul tells us that the Gospel is the “power of God unto salvation”. Salvation is all encompassing and will affect every area of our lives if we will allow our minds to be renewed by God’s Word.

Jesus told His disciples a parable which illustrates the importance of God’s Word in Mark 4. It provides us with the story of a man who had a bag of seed and scattered it across four types of ground.

The first type of ground was “wayside”. This is a type of ground which is so packed and hardened that it will be impossible for the seed to take root. Seed will not penetrate it and therefore will be eaten by the birds.

Second, Jesus described a type of ground that is rocky. Seed is able to take root in this ground but it will not be able grow anything more than a shallow root system. We may seen signs of plants starting to grow in this ground but they will not have deep enough roots to survive.

The third type of ground has depth. Seeds are able to take root and begin to grow. They will not survive though because of a large number of weeds and thorn bushes that are also growing in this field. Ground only has an ability to support a limited number of plants due to a limit on how many nutrients are available. Seeds are not able to grow and produce in the third type of ground due to the large number of weeds and thorns that compete for the ground’s  nutrients.

Finally, Jesus told His disciples about a good ground that did not have rocks, weeds, and that was not packed down. Seed will prosper here and produce thirty, sixty, and even one hundredfold harvests!

And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?
Mark 4:13

The disciples asked Jesus about this parable and this is part of His answer. This parable provides us with the foundational truth of His teaching. He told them that if they were unable to understand it, they would be unable to understand any of His other teachings.
