We have looked at three examples of people who found freedom through the Word of God. Each one of us can also find answers to our situation as well! It will teach us how to walk in divine health, prosper in business, and find freedom from emotional bondages. There is not a problem that can be solved if we would be willing to pay the price to make the Word of God first in our lives.
A lot of people prefer to just come to church and set their Bibles aside afterwards. It is much easier for a minister to lay hands on us and let the anointing “magically” fix all of our problems than to spend hours alone with God meditating on truths of His Word. Many people look at their pastor or other minister as a “professional” who gets paid to walk in the anointing. I agree that it is easier to let the pastor pay the price so we will not have to give up our game, or our favorite television program!
Spiritual growth will require us to begin taking responsibility for our spiritual growth. The key to this will be the Word of God. There are no shortcuts. It will require us to fall in love with Scripture. We look at large ministries like Kenneth E. Hagin, Kenneth Copeland, or others with envy but miss the price each one paid in the early years when no one knew them.
Successful Christian growth will always follow intense times of meditation in God’s Word! It will require us to turn off the television but the reward will be worth any program we will sacrifice. There are people who have read the Bible but only as just another book. The Word of God is so deep that it will not be possible for us to ever find an end to the revelation knowledge that can be drawn from it!
10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
1 Corinthians 13:10-12
Our spiritual growth is dependent on our ability to see and perceive God. Our society is filled with distractions that pull Christians away from Him. We have hundreds of television channels, sporting events, movies, and the latest headlines to keep up with. It will only be to the degree we are able to turn away from these things to the Word of God that we will see and perceive the things of God.
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
1 John 3:2
We can be just like Jesus and walk in the miraculous! It is possible to live in victory over the trials and suffering of this life. There will be a price though that we must pay to press into the Word of God so that it can renew our minds to the ways of God.
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 4:12
Jesus was able to endure the unimaginable horrors of His crucifixion because He had the joy of knowing we would be restored to fellowship with God if He just held the course. The Gospel account tells us that they mocked Him, spit on Him, beat Him, placed a crown of thorns on His head, and drove nails into His hands and feet. Jesus endured it all to obtain our redemption!
I think we struggle with our commitment to God because our focus is on our needs instead of those around us. Jesus was able to endure by focusing on the “joy set before Him” which was the eternal redemption of mankind. There is a price to pay for God’s anointing and revelation knowledge. Many people have begun on the path to spiritual growth but did not continue. In my experience this is usually because of an external focus on self. There will be temptations to quit. When these come I encourage you to think about where we would be if Jesus quit when things got difficult.
Jesus did not die for Himself. People get hurt by criticism and rejection because their focus is on themselves. There are millions who have never heard the Gospel message. God needs people who will be willing to pay the price to put their desires and self nature to death. People will criticize us and may call us extremists for thinking that God’s miraculous power is for today. It is far easier to live life taking care of ourselves and not worrying about those around us but this is not the life God has called us to live!
