Fundamentals of Christian Growth Part 6

The Word of God is the key that will unlock all of God’s blessings in our lives. Unfortunately, we have put prayer in the place of Scripture. Christians will beg and plead with God for things that He has already given them. Many of these same people will spend hours pleading with God to take care of the devil when He told us to resist Satan (James 4:7).

For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
Mark 11:23

Did Jesus tell us to speak to the mountains in our lives? The answer is yes! He has told us to speak to our mountains. Why are so many Christians standing before their mountains and pleading with Him to push them out of the way then? Jesus did not tell us to talk to Him about our mountains!

God has done His part in providing for our every need. It is now up to us to take what He has provided and step into our place in Christ Jesus. This will include speaking to the mountains that stand in our way as we journey on the path God has called us to walk.

We will not grow spiritually by continuing to speak to God about our problems! He has provided us everything “pertaining” to our lives through the knowledge of His Word (2 Peter 1:3). It takes effort to develop revelation knowledge. Each one of us must determine the price we are willing to pay to seek God. The old-timers referred to this as dying to self but it seems as if this phrase has lost popularity in the modern Church.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:7

It is not possible to resist the devil passively! The devil is not fleeing from the majority of Christians today because they are not resisting him with anything more than a few fleeting words. I believe that it is a tragedy that many are more familiar with current events than they are with Scripture. There are even Christians that can tell us the stats of many sports figures then they can quote Bible verses.

“Would you please pray for me? The doctor has told me I am dying!”

Christians say things like this all the time. I once had a doctor sit across the desk from me and deliver a death report. He told me that my life could be extended six months with “aggressive” treatment after diagnosing a malignant melanoma on my forehead. We need to be led by the Spirit and He may not lead you to do what I did. A death sentence was spoken over me and I did not go for any further treatments or tests. Instead, I took a series on healing and listened to all twenty-plus, messages more than one hundred times over the next year. The doctors did not give me hope of living beyond six months but God’s Word told me a different story and I was healed! This would not have happened though if I had not obeyed the Holy Spirit and aggressively immersed myself in those messages and Scripture.

In my experience,

it seems as if Christians will lean towards putting more faith in the doctor’s report than God’s report. We have a choice. I did not deny the report spoken over my life but instead chose to acknowledge God’s report as a higher truth.

Am I against medical science or doctors? Absolutely not! Many wonderful people are alive today because of medical science. The Holy Spirit directed me not to pursue treatment but this does not mean that there are some people whom He leads to pursue it. Medical science does have a place but we can develop in faith to the point of living in divine health so we do not have to lean on it.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Romans 1:16

Paul tells us that the Word of God is the power of God to salvation if we believe. Salvation is all-encompassing! The Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance tells us that the Greek word for this could also be translated as deliver, health, save or saving. God has given us His power in His Word! The sad truth is that most people who identify as Christian will choose the doctor’s report over God’s.

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.
2 Peter 1:3

God has provided us everything we will ever need in His Word! The word translated “all things” in Greek means “all things”. What is that we need? Whatever it is has already been provided to us. We access this provision through the Word of God.

Religious institutions have re-interpreted the Scriptures. They will tell us that we access the things of God by living a holy life. This is important but not what Peter is telling us in this verse. All things come through knowledge, not through living holy, prayer, fasting, or spiritual warfare.

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
2 Peter  1:4

This verse is a continuation of the thought introduced in verse 3. The knowledge of God provides us with the Word of God. The Word of God is the knowledge of God that will produce all things which pertain to life and godliness. Everything that we need can be found in the Word of God. Accessing this supply will require us to turn away from everything else to put our focus entirely on the Word of God!
