And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
Mark 11:22
We have seen in the previous post that this verse literally reads, “have the faith of God”. This can also be interpreted as “have the God kind of faith”.
Jesus was directing His disciples to possess the faith of God and to exercise it. He had not yet gone to the cross. The new birth was not available to the disciples. Jesus was the only man alive at the time who had the life of God dwelling in His spirit.
The disciples were not saved. He still told them to possess the God kind of faith and to use it. This tells us that it is possible for someone who is not saved to exercise faith. Hebrews 11 provides an account of Old Testament saints who exercised faith. These men and woman were not saved!
When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
Matthew 8:10
Jesus said this about an unsaved Roman Centurion. A person can exercise faith without being a Christian. If this were not true, why is faith required to receive salvation?
Faith is of the spirit. Men and woman are spirit beings regardless of whether or not they have received Jesus as their Savior.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:10
The heart is a reference to the human spirit. If an unbeliever is not capable of exercising faith no one could be saved!
Jesus told His disciples that they were to have the God kind of faith. He then provided a description of this faith for them.
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
Mark 11:23
Notice that Jesus said, “Whosoever.” He did not exclude anyone from being able to exercise the God kind of faith!
We are talking about what happens when a mountain meets faith. Notice that Jesus uses a mountain in His description of God’s faith. He told His disciples that “whosoever” speaks to the mountains in their life using this faith has a right to expect the mountain to be removed!
