Traditions Of Men Part 34

If our focus is on how we’re performing for God we will always fail. There will always be someone who does more than us and we will always fall short.

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
1 John 3:20

“But God, I’ve done this, this, and this for you!”

Statements like this are sure fire indicators our focus is on what we have done and not on God’s grace.

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Hebrews 9:14

We must purge our conscious with the Word of God.

That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.
Ephesians 5:26

We go around with a constant state of condemnation due to a religious focus on works. This was the mentality of the Old Covenant that Jesus provides redemption for. The author of Hebrews tells us that this is what blocks us from serving God.

Religion will keep us in bondage to a sin consciousness. It provides continuous reminders that keep us more aware of our failings than of God’s grace. This limits God from working in our lives.

Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
Mark 7:13

Sin has been obliterated by the blood of Jesus! We must renew our minds to the truth of God’s Word in this area!

Our redemption is eternal. It is not momentary and it is not based on what we do for God!

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Hebrews 9:12

Through this eternal redemption we are provided an eternal inheritance.

And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
Hebrews 9:15

  • We have eternal redemption!
  • We have eternal forgiveness of sins!
  • We have an eternal inheritance that is based on Christ’s works and not ours!

There is a large segment of Christians who believe they are redeemed as long as they live holy and do everything right. Some of these even believe that they will have to be saved again if they sin which leads to a constant state of condemnation.

I once heard a professor in college talk about the need for continuous repentance in our lives. He even went to the point of saying a person could live without sin for decades serving God and end up in hell as a result of one bad thought just as they passed away. This is not eternal redemption!
