What Is Faith Part 16

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5

We have been talking about the fight of faith. Paul tells us that this will involve us pulling down strongholds consisting of “imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God”.

Satan cannot force us to do anything. He will bring thoughts but it is our choice to receive them or not to. If we do then over time they will become strongholds hindering us from receiving what has been provided in our redemption. These can be pulled down by bring them into “captivity” to “the obedience of Christ”.

The enemy cannot make us do anything. He must first get us to agree with him. Thoughts are his primary tool to make this happen.

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Genesis 3:1-5

We see an illustration of how Satan works in the first temptation. He brought thoughts and suggestions to Eve designed to cause her to question what God had said. It was her choice to consider what he said or to reject it.

Thoughts will come. This is where the fight of faith will be required. We lay hold of the promises of faith and refuse any thought that is contrary to the promise we’re standing on.

We must be ready morning, noon, and night for thoughts to come. They are Satan’s primary tool and are used to keep us from inheriting the promised land.

Satan is persistent. He will send thoughts and feelings sometimes hundreds of times every day. He will try and wear us down with these. We must stand firm in the Word of God. This is how we lay hold of eternal life!
