What Is Faith Part 15

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
1 Timothy 6:12

We have discussed the fact that Christians are called to live and walk by faith. We will also have to fight the good fight of faith.

Paul tells us to “lay hold on eternal life”. This will require us to fight the fight of faith.

I’ve heard people say they just need to let go and let God. There is a big difference between letting go and laying hold. We do let go of our worries and doubts but we do not sit passively waiting on God to do what He has asked us to do.

Our instruction is to fight. This is not passive.

Our instruction is to lay hold. This is not passive.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God
Ephesians 2:8

When a person receives salvation they must lay hold of it by faith. God has provided it as a free gift through His grace but it requires us to lay hold of it by faith. This is what Paul meant when he wrote that it is “by grace” “through faith” that we are saved.

To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
Ephesians 1:6

We are accepted by God but must lay hold of His acceptance by faith.

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
1 Peter 2:24

We were healed by the stripes of Jesus but must lay hold of our healing by faith.

Satan will come with thoughts and feelings contrary to the Word of God. Our mind is where the fight of faith will be fought.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5

The strong holds that Paul wrote about are not spiritual. They consist of imaginations and thoughts contrary to the Word of God. He tells us that it is our responsibility to cast down any thought that would try to become larger in our thoughts than the Word of God.

We are called fight the good fight of faith. This is not a fight of feeling or reasonings. It is a fight of faith. It will require us to keep believing what God said about us regardless of what we see or feel in the natural realm.

We are called to fight feelings of depression!

We are called to fight feelings of despair!

We are called to fight temptation!

We fight anything that tries to convince us we cannot do what God said about us.

We fight anything that tries to convince us we do not have what God promises us in His Word.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh.
2 Corinthians 10:3

We are in the flesh but our warfare is not after the flesh. The following verses provide further direction.

(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:4-5

The strongholds Paul speaks of are imaginations and thoughts are contrary to the knowledge of God which is found in Scripture. Our fight is against the ungodly thoughts, feelings, and images. We will always have to deal with these regardless of how much we grow spiritually.

Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
Luke 8:12

Jesus told His disciples that Satan will work to “take away the word”. This is the Word that we receive. Satan will work to steal it from us before it is able to gain root in our spirits. He will do this with thoughts and feelings designed to cause us to question what we have heard.
