Keys To Increasing In Spiritual Awareness Part 2

And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
Hebrews 8:11

We live in a covenant that allows every person to know God personally. There is no differentiation given for social standing or a person’s place in society!

The word translated “know” in this verse is ginṓskō. It denotes a knowing based on personal experience.

Old Testament saints could not know God personally. They had to go where His presence dwelt which was either the Tabernacle or the Temple.

Today we can know God personally. His Holy Spirit dwells within our spirits and He desires to have fellowship with every one of us!

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:16

Every one of us can approach the throne of God with boldness. He will accept us and give us time with Him.

If we will dedicate ourselves to developing a relationship in prayer His voice will become clearer and clearer to us. This is just like any other relationship though. It will require time and effort to develop.

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John 14:16-17

Why did Jesus say that the world cannot receive the Holy Spirit? I believe the reason is that unsaved people are oblivious to the Him. Jesus gave two reasons for this:

  • They do not see Him
  • They do not know Him

The first step to increasing our spiritual sensitivity is developing an awareness of the Spirit’s presence. This is a struggle for many Christians. They try and make every interaction with Him spectacular because their focus is on the natural realm. Our relationship with Him usually will not involve an audible voice, prophetic utterance, or a vision.

The Holy Spirit normally will speak to us in a very still voice within our spirits. It will require us to develop the habit of quietness as we wait in His presence for us to develop in our relationship with Him.

We will find that the Holy Spirit mostly communicates via promptings or what some call a witness. These will always consist of nonverbal promptings that may come in the form of us just knowing the right direction.

There are many voices in the world today. Christians get themselves into messes trying to hear a voice.

14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
2 Corinthians 11:14-15

Satan is very deceptive. He will accommodate us if we want to hear a voice. This is how many have been led off the path God planned for them.

We can have the witness and knowing of the Holy Spirit guiding us all day and night. He is standing by to guide us. As we increase our sensitivity to the things of God we will learn to recognize His promptings even more clearly.
