What Is Faith Part 1

We are going to begin a new series in this post. Our focus will be on faith with a goal of learning what faith is and how we use it in our daily lives.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Hebrews 11:6

We are told that it is impossible to please God without faith. It is something that every Christian should take very seriously and work to gain revelation of.

Hebrews 11 is a chapter that every Christian should spend much time meditating in. It provides us with a definition of faith and it also contains examples of biblical figures who were known for their faith.

There are many different facets to faith. If we are going to walk in faith we must understand what Scripture teaches about it. Let’s begin our study with an examination of what faith is.

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Romans 1:17

Paul tells us that righteousness is revealed from “faith to faith” and tells us that “the just shall live by faith”. It is impossible to find an end to our need of walking by faith.

  • Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
    Habakkuk 2:4
  • But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.”
    Galatians 3:11
  • Now the just shall live by faith. But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.”
    Hebrews 10:38

We have four verses that tell us the “just shall live by faith”. There are many who will criticize the faith message but it is the message of Scripture. Some have twisted it and taught it to an extreme but this does not invalidate its importance.

One of the first things we must realize will be that faith is not just a doctrine or position we follow. It is a way of living. Faith is the way we live, speak, and interact with our heavenly Father.

We will see that faith is the only way for us to successfully deal with any issue.

Faith is how God lives. It is how He created the heavens and earth.

Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
1 Corinthians 11:1

Jesus lives and ministered by faith. Paul did the same. He encouraged his readers to follow his example of faith as he had followed Jesus’

Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Hebrews 11:3

Creation was “framed by the Word of God”. Faith is how this was accomplished.

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their host.
Psalms 33:6

The Psalmist tells us that creation was made by the “word of the Lord”.

Faith is always founded in the Word of God and faith always flows from the Word of God.

For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.
Psalm 33:9

The heavens and earth came into existence as God spoke faith filled words.

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
Genesis 1:2-4

Notice that God “said”. We see here what the Psalmist was referring to when he said that God spoke and it was done.

God does not need sleep like we do. Everything He does is done by faith.
