Who Is This Holy Spirit Part 9

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
John 16:16-17

  • Another advocate
  • Spirit of truth
  • The world cannot accept Him
  • The world does not see Him
  • The world does not know Him
  • We know Him
  • He live with us
  • He is in us

Did you notice how many times Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit with masculine pronouns? In these two verses we see three statements about non Christian and three about Christians. All six use either “Him” or “He”.

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
John 16:26

The Holy Spirit is a person. We said in an earlier post that He is a knowable person. Jesus said that we would know Him because He is with us and in us.

Jesus also described the Holy Spirit as an advocate and a teacher. He said the Spirit will “teach us all things”.

But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
1 John 2:20

Does this verse sound similar to what Jesus said in John’s Gospel? This unction John is describing is the Holy Spirit. Both Jesus and John tells us that He, the Holy Spirit will “teach us all things”.

As you grow in your relationship with the Holy Spirit, you will notice how interested He is in your life. He is a gentleman though and will not force His help or instruction on us. This is why He is sometimes referred to as our standby. He is always standing by to help and teach us but waits until we ask to do so.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
2 Corinthians 13:14

There are a number of passages where all three persons of the Godhead are referenced. This is one of them.

There is one God. Some think that this means there is only one person. These people teach that God the Father who is Jesus who is the same person as the Holy Spirit. Scripture teaches us something totally different.

  • There is one God
  • There is one Son – Jesus
  • There is one Holy Spirit

These are three distinct persons but each is God.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Genesis 1:26

Who is “us” if God is one person?

The word translated God is Elohim which is a uni-plural noun which is a noun made up of more than one thing. Deer and fish are examples of uni-plural nouns in the English language.

Think about the church you may attend. If it were the First Church we could reference by name and be talking about the entity or the congregation who makes up First Church.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
2 Corinthians 13:14

Paul uses the word God to reference God the Father. Genesis 1:26 is referring to the Godhead. This is seen by the usage of the phrase “let us”.

Let’s look at example of this from Jesus’ life.

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John 14:16-17

If Jesus were the Father and Jesus is the Holy Spirit why would He pray to Himself?

Why would He ask Himself to send the Holy Spirit instead of just doing it?

If Jesus is the Holy Spirit then why would He ask the Father to send Himself when He had already been sent?

Can you see how religious tradition has confused things?

Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
Luke 22:42

If Jesus was the Father then why would He commit Himself to His will?

The Holy Spirit is a separate person from Jesus. He is also a separate person from God the Father.

God consists of three separate persons – God the Father, Jesus the son, and the Holy Spirit. Christians can develop a relationship with each one.
