Who Is This Holy Spirit Part 6

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
2 Corinthians 13:14

The Holy Spirit desires to have a relationship with you. He will respond to you if you’ll train yourself to recognize His presence.

We have seen in previous posts that the Holy Spirit is a divine person. He takes up residence in the spirit of every Christian.

I recommend that you go back to the book of Acts. Throughout the book you will see constant references to the Holy Spirit. It quickly becomes apparent that He was much more real to the early Church than He is to the modern Church.

Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
Acts 8:29

Philip recognized the Holy Spirit’s voice and understood what He was saying. His voice can be just as real to us today!

I’ve heard people argue that these things were only for the apostles. Philip was not one. He was an evangelist and he recognized the voice and leading of the Holy Spirit.

We will study further how the Holy Spirit speaks to us. It is not in audible voice. He speaks to us through our spirit.

Luke did not say that the Spirit spoke to Philip in an audible voice. He tells us that the Spirit spoke and we see Philip responded.

And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
Acts 8:30-39

The Eunuch was an official in a foreign nation. Philip followed the Spirit’s leading and was able to lead him to salvation. This had to have affected the nation of Ethiopia.

While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
Acts 10:19-20

Peter had been in a time of prayer. He saw a vision and then the Holy Spirit spoke to him. There are two things we see:

  • The Holy Spirit spoke to Peter
  • The Holy Spirit sent the men to Peter

Once again Luke does not say the Holy Spirit spoke audibly to Peter. People get into a ditch attempting to make everything in the Christian life spectacular.

The supernatural things of God are not always spectacular. They can sometimes seem so normal that we miss the source.

There are times when the Spirit’s direction comes in the form of a thought. It takes time in prayer and the Word of God to train ourselves to recognize His leadings and promptings.

Peter was thinking about the vision he had seen. I’m sure that he was wondering what it meant. While he sat thinking the Spirit spoke to him and he recognized the Spirit’s voice.
