Traditions Of Men Part 12

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28

We saw in our last post that this verse begins with a conjunction. It seems that every Christian knows this verse but few know the preceding ones it is linked to.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Romans 8:26-27

In context Romans 8:28 is conveying the thought that all things work together for good for the person who is interceding jointly with the Holy Spirit. Paul is not telling us that all things will work together for everyone.

We need to enter into intercession. The Holy Spirit is with us and will help lead us along the path. He is standby and will take together against the load we are interceding for.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28

There is one more thing we need to take note of in this verse. It does not say that all things come from God. Many Christians have interpreted it this way but they are in error.

People read things into Scripture that are wrong. I’ve had people argue with me about this verse. They state with great conviction that it provides proof all things come from God. Even in the Greek it says no such thing!

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
John 10:10

Anything that steals, kills, or brings destruction in our life is from Satan. Paul is telling us that God can take anything and turn it for our good if we are operating in partnership with the Holy Spirit.

If we are seeking God and spending time in intercession things will work out for good. This does not mean bad things will not happen. Satan will work to cause them but when we are working in partnership with the Holy Spirit God will cause his schemes to turn out for the good.

This doctrine that teaches God causes bad things to teach people a lesson invalidates the truth of His goodness. I have met many people who want nothing to do with Him because of what they’ve heard Christians testify.

Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
Mark 7:13

People accept what is taught simply because a person has the title of pastor reverend. We must learn to examine Scripture for ourselves. Every Christian has the Holy Spirit dwelling in their spirit. He will reveal the Word if we will open it and make the time to meditate on its truths.

In some senses these doctrines provide an escape from responsibility. If God is the cause of our problems then we there would be no need for us to repent of our mistakes. This allows us to be as carnal as we desire and accept no responsibility for the consequences.

  • We don’t have to seek God
  • We don’t have to renew our minds
  • We don’t have to accept responsibility

If God ‘s will is going to come to pass regardless of what we do than why would anyone put any effort into their Christian walk?

Can you see how twisted these doctrines are? The devil has blinded most of the Church with the very traditions we hold sacred.

  1. I agree: all things do not come from God. I often refer to James 1:17 which tells us every GOOD gift and every PERFECT gift comes from God. Anything evil, on the other hand, has another origin (Barnes’ Notes on the Bible)!
