The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
2 Corinthians 13:14
I remember the first time reading this verse. It was shortly after receiving Christ. The church we went to as a child never spoke of the Holy Spirit and I wondered who or what He was.
We are beginning study of the Holy Spirit. Many Christians are in the same position I was. They attend churches that never talk about Him and have no understanding of His ministry in their lives. Our goal in this series will be for us to come to an understanding of who this third person of the trinity is.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Romans 8:14
Paul tells us that “sons of God” should be led by the Spirit of God. This will not be possible if we do not first recognize His presence in our lives.
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.
Romans 8:16
The word translated “itself” here is incorrect. It should be “Himself”. Paul tells us that He is the one who provides assurance that we are the children of God.
Paul tells us in Romans 8:14 that the Holy Spirit leads. He does not force anyone to do anything they choose not to. The Holy Spirit leads us if we will follow His direction.
Do you want to follow His direction? This will require us to become more aware of His presence in our lives.
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.
John 14:16
The Holy Spirit is the helper that Jesus prayed to the Father for. He is the helper who empowers and guides us. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would be with us forever. This means we are never without help as we navigate the waters of life.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
2 Corinthians 13:14
Communion could also be translated as fellowship. We can develop a relationship with the Holy Spirit. It is through this relationship that He guides us.
But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
1 John 2:20
The anointing that John is referencing is the Holy Spirit who is dwelling within us. We will never know enough to make the right decision but He does. He is dwelling within us and He is the source of all knowledge! This is why John tells us that we “know all things”.
We will never be smart enough relying on our knowledge but we are not alone. The Holy Spirit will help us in every aspect of life if we learn to look to Him and follow His leading.
My wife and I met on a missions cruise. We lived in separate cities and seemed to be total opposites. From a natural perspective it seemed that there would be no way for us to make it. The Holy Spirit knew both of us. He led us together and fifteen years later it is amazing to look back and see all that God has done.
It was impossible for either of us to know how things would turn out. I had made a number of bad life decisions and had tremendous debt. My wife had a successful career and from every appearance was making a huge mistake to marry me. She could not see the future but had the Holy Spirit guiding her. He knew how things would turn out. He led us together and our life together is truly a testimony of God’s goodness.
There are numerous references to the Holy Spirit in Scripture. I have found over forty different titles and designations for Him. He is very multifaceted and He desires to have a relationship with you!
Jesus spoke these words before going to the cross. The Holy Spirit had been with the disciples but they were not born again.
Jesus told them that the Holy Spirit would be in them. This was not possible before the cross. It is through the new birth that He is able to enter into our spirits.
If you have invited Jesus into your life the Holy Spirit is in your Spirit. He is with you and He is in you! You can have a relationship with Him.
The Holy Spirit is with us, He is in us, and He is on us.
