We have been discussing our first tradition, the sovereignty of God. In my mind this has caused more damage that any other religious tradition.
As we open this evening let me ask a question. People talk about God being the source of their sicknesses. Insurance companies describe natural disasters as “acts of God”. My question is whether or not you would want to serve a God who is responsible for every tragedy, sickness, and disaster in your and life?
I have heard ministers talk about God using sickness as a tool to teach His children lessons. This is not the God I see in the Bible.
Religion falsely portrays God as being in control. It tells us that He “sovereignly” controls everything.
“I know God caused this and has a purpose for my suffering.”
I’ve heard people hear this. Their actions say something much different.
“God placed this sickness on me to teach a lesson.”
If people really believed God put the sickness on us to teach us a lesson, why would they go a doctor and try to get out of His will?
God is not the author of sickness or the tragedies that occur in our lives. This doctrine is dangerous because anyone who embraces it will never be able to accept that God is good. They will be unable to believe He has a good plan for their lives.
“God works in mysterious ways.”
I believe that this is a cop out. It is way to avoid taking responsibility for our choices.
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
John 10:10
As we move forward in our study it will be important to keep in mind that our world is under the control of Satan. His goal is to steal, kill, and destroy. The tragedies of life are a result of our not following God’s direction and living in a fallen world.
