We are spending time discussing tradition and its effect on the Church. In this post we will begin specifically looking at a teaching that has wrongly represented God and robbed far too many Christians from being able to experience His goodness.
Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
Mark 7:13
The tradition we are going to be examining is the sovereignty of God. There are ministers who teach that nothing can happen in our lives without God’s intervention. They tell their congregations that God is in complete control of their lives.
My first personal experience with this doctrine occurred while I was in Bible college. A professor began to present an extreme view of sovereignty. He went to the point of even saying people do not have a choice in whether or not they are saved. This man told us that he would sit watching his sons sleep at night with tears in his eyes because it was impossible to know if God would choose either of them to receive salvation.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Romans 10:13
Paul did not say that “whosoever God has chosen” will call. There are no qualifiers given! Whosoever shall call upon the Lord will find salvation.
I have heard ministers say that the devil cannot do anything in our lives without God giving him permission. This means that every tragedy that happens is God’s fault in a sense because He has to first give the devil permission to cause the event.
We are going to examine Scripture to determine the truth about God’s sovereignty. These teaching I have shared are based in tradition and not God’s Word.
It seems that the majority of Christians are unable to see God as good because of the lies they have been taught. Every sickness, tragedy, and financial lack in their lives is attributed to Him. I have even heard people ask why they would want to serve a God who would do such terrible things to people.
If you look at this worlds system and everything bad that is happening with a view that God is causing all of the junk that is happening, it will be impossible for you to view Him as being good. This is the danger of how His sovereignty has been taught. It is the reason that I believe that this is one of the most dangerous traditions being taught today.
