Why Does It Seem As If the Miraculous Is An Afterthought?

Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.
Acts 3:1-7

Peter and John were heading into the temple to pray.
A lame man stopped them.
The man asked them for a handout but got a miracle.

Can you see yourself grabbing that man the way Peter did? Many people cannot. This is why we do not see greater manifestations of the Spirit today.

For I am the LORD, I change not…
Malachi 3:6

God has not changed.

Jesus has not changed.

The Holy Spirit has not changed.

So why are we not seeing miracles like this today?

Many in the Church today will try and convince us that God no longer heals today or that the time for miracles has passed. I cannot find evidence of this in the Bible, can you?

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
2 Peter 1:3-4

Peter tells us that God has “given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness”. If you are sick would you consider healing to “pertain” to your life? I sure would. If you were in the leper’s shoes would a miracle enabling you to walk be something you would consider to “pertain” to your life? I would!

So God has not changed, Jesus has not changed, and the Holy Spirit has not changed.

It seems to me that if something has changed it is us and not God.

Peter tells us that God has provided for our every need through “the knowledge of him that hath called us”. Where do we gain that knowledge?

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:17

The Bible is our source for knowledge about God. Many Christians can repeat all of the current headlines but could not recite a single verse.

Faith in God comes from hearing the Word of God.

Faith in the headlines comes from hearing the news reports.

Faith in our favorite sports team comes from watching games and meditating on the players stats.

The world is full of distractions. Satan is working overtime to keep us from finding the “knowledge of him that hath called us”. Unfortunately many Christians are enabling him and not turning to the Word in their storms.

I challenge you to pay attention to what patients are doing the next time you visit a hospital. It is a rarity to find a single one that is not watching television. We pray for them with no results.

There are times that God in His mercy intervenes but the only guaranteed way to a miracle is through the Word of God.

For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.
Isaiah 50:7

God has provided for our every need in His Word. We need to set our “face like a flint” if our goal is to walk in everything provided by Christ’s redemptive work.

Think about what Peter did when the lame man asked for a handout…

• He did not offer to pray
• He did cry out to God to intervene
• He did not try and comfort the man

Peter locked his eyes on the man. He did not hesitate because he was confident in His relationship with God.

The man asked for a handout and Peter commanded him to walk!

Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
Acts 3:6

What would we have done in this situation?

“Oh God… We know that you are limitless and able to touch this poor hurting soul…”

I have heard ministers pray prayers like this over sick people. I’ve personally never seen God answer one of these prayers.

What if we did what Peter did? Are we settled in Scripture to the point where we could take a lame persons hand and command them to walk? This requires us to have a deep foundation in the Word of God. A deep foundation does not mean just memorizing a bunch of verses. It means we spend the time meditating on the Word until it becomes revelation knowledge.
