For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.
Notice in verse two that it tells us that “the worshippers once purged should have had not more conscience of sins”. If the offerings of the Old Covenant were able to make the people perfect they would not have been offered “continually”.
The Old Testament sacrifices were symbolic. They pointed to the coming Messiah who would offer one sacrifice that would satisfy the penalty for all sin. Jesus’ sacrifice was that one sacrifice that dealt with sin once and for all!
If we were to take one of the old justice scales and put all of the sin of every person who will ever walk this earth on one side it would sink to the ground.
If you were to take that scale and add just one drop of Jesus’ blood to the other side, it would outweigh the weight of the entirety of humanities sin!
The blood of Jesus is much greater than the sin of the entire human race.
I have heard people criticize this message and claim it makes light of sin. They say this without realizing that by doing so they are making light of the blood of Jesus.
I hate sin. It has consequences that will even affect a Christian. Jesus dealt with sin but if we allow it in our lives, it will open the door for Satan to bring destruction into our lives.
Sin is not smart. It is emotional. I have a friend whose daughter was recently abandoned by her husband. He has no interest in their children and has run off and slept with several other women. The divorce is not even finalized and one of the girls he is sleeping has gotten pregnant. This man has been deceived by Satan and cannot see the damage his sin is causing.
I hate sin but also know that sin does not separate me from God. All sin has been atoned for. Minister often say that our sins have been covered by the blood but the Bible tells us they have been eradicated. Something that is covered can be uncovered but something eradicated is no more!
I made a lot of mistakes in my youth. Early in my Christian walk I allowed the enemy to beat me up and so I spent hours crying out to God in repentance. He had called me into ministry but my sin had disqualified me and it broke my heart to think my call would go unfulfilled.
God spoke to me during one of my pity parties. He spoke in that still small voice in my spirit and asked me what I was talking about. That surprised me so I went back and recited all the sins me pea brain could remember. The Lord told me He had no memory of any of them! That shook me to the core. How could God have no memory of my sin?
For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
God took me to this verse. When I asked forgiveness He not only forgave me but He also wiped my sin from His memory. They were eliminated by the blood of Jesus!
Jesus’ blood is worth more than every vile thing that every human being has ever done! There is no sin greater than His blood.
“You just don’t understand. I’ve done so many bad things and don’t know if God can forgive me.”
I used to say similar things until my experience with the Lord. It does not matter what you have done in the past. If you have given your heart to Jesus, His blood has washed you clean!
