Did you know that the war between God and man over sin is over? Most Christians do not seem to be enjoying the benefits of their salvation because they do not understand this simple truth.
In our last post we started talking about the book of Hebrews. We saw that it presents a new way to approach God that is based on the work of Jesus.
The ninth chapter of Hebrews presents a series of contrasts between the Old and New Testaments. We are told that every piece of furniture in the Old Testament tabernacle has a New Testament counterpart. The author talks about each of these except one.
And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly. (Hebrews 9:5)
The only piece of Old Testament furniture that does not apply to us today are these “cherubims of glory” that sat over the mercy seat. These were located in the Holy of Holies which was separated from the other sections of the tabernacle by a curtain. The cherubims were located over the Ark of the Covenant which contained Aaron’s rod, the ten commandments, and a pot of mana. This section was holy and only the High Priest could enter it once per year.
The cherubims were mighty warrior angels sent to keep anyone from approaching God who would kill the High Priest if everything was not perfect when he entered the Holy of Holies. We first see these angels mentioned in Genesis 3:
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. (Genesis 3:24)
They would tie a rope around the High Priest’s foot so they would have a way to extract his body if he was struck dead for improperly approaching God. I’ve sometimes wondered if ministers would approach ministry much more seriously if the had to have a rope tied around their foot every time the stepped behind the pulpit to deliver a message!
The author of Hebrews tells us that he was unable to talk about the cherubims. I believe that the reason for this was that the veil into the Holy of Holies had been torn down the middle.
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. (Matthew 27:50-53)
The veil was torn from top to bottom when Jesus died. Every Christian has the right to enter into God’s presence without fear of the angels striking them dead!
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. (Ephesians 1:5-6)
If you are a Christian you will never be rejected when you approach God! Unfortunately this is a revelation that many Christians are missing. We live our Christian lives as if the veil is still separating us from God when it has been removed.
“Oh God… Will you please move in this situation?”
Oh God… I’ve messed up so badly! Is there anyway you can forgive me?”
Prayers like flow from an Old Testament mentality. We must move beyond this if we are ever going to enter into the fullness of God’s plan for our lives!
