The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against the ungodliness of men. I have heard people quote this verse many times over the years and stop right there. We need to take note of the last part of this verse:
“who hold the truth in unrighteousness”
I have heard ministers use this verse to explain the tragedies Christians suffer but they are not quoting the verse in context. The wrath of God is revealed on men and woman who intuitively know the truth but choose to continue in their sins.
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. (Romans 1:19)
As we have been working through the first chapter of Romans we saw first that it is the goodness of God that draws men and women to Himself. He reveals Himself to mankind through creation and has placed the knowledge of truth in our hearts when we were born.
The sad truth is that His wrath is poured out on those who choose to reject His free gift of salvation. This is sad because the Word clearly tells us that His wrath was poured on Jesus to satisfy the penalties for our sin.
Every person has an intuitive knowledge of God. There is not a single person who will ever live that has not at one time or another been aware of their sins.
There is not a single person who has lied that did not intuitively know it was wrong to do so.
There is not a single person who has stolen that did not intuitively know it was wrong.
We could name sin after sin and every person who has committed any of them knew at one point or another that what they were doing was wrong.
Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron … (1 Timothy 4:2)
The conscience is the voice of our spirit. God has place the knowledge of right and wrong inside of us and our conscience will convict us when we do wrong.
When people ignore their conscious they will start to form callouses that hinder their ability to hear its voice. Paul tells us that the end result is a seared conscience. This word could also be translated “cauterize or to burn with a hot iron”. To cauterize something means:
- Blunt
- Dampen
- Deaden
- Dull
- Numb
A person who continuous ignores their conscience and continues in sin will eventually deaden or dull their ability to hears its voice. This is the point where the door is open for judgment and it is also the place where Satan will have free reign in their lives.
The conscience is the voice of our spirit. We must be careful not to ignore it. Paul said that he strived always to keep his conscience clear before God and man. Let us pray the Holy Spirit will teach us to do the same!
