And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. (Luke 24:43-44)
Jesus appeared to two men on the Emmaus Road and taught them a three part sermon.
- Part 1 – The Law of Moses
- Part 2 – The Prophets
- Part 3 – The Psalms
The focus of His series was Himself. He taught them about Himself through the first five books of the Bible which were known as the Law of Moses. Luke tells us that their hearts burned within them as He spoke.
Jesus began with the Law of Moses so my guess is that He started with the book of Genesis. We are not told the order of Scripture that He followed. In this post we will begin with the very first prophecy of the Messiah. This was a prophetic word delivered by God to Adam and Eve. There were no prophets and I believe that this prophecy set the ground rules for all prophecies that would follow.
And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. (Genesis 3:11-15)
Genesis 3 contains a prophetic word from God to the devil. God laid out the entire plan of redemption in verses 13 – 15. This prophecy describes the devil’s defeat.
It is interesting to note that God said He would put enmity between the woman’s seed and Satan’s seed. Women do not have seed. They have eggs. Mary is the only woman in history to give birth to child without the involvement of a man. She was impregnated with the very Word of God! Her seed was Jesus.
Jesus’ lifetime on earth is summarized in this prophecy. This is why I believe that He probably began His message on the Emmaus Road here.
The Messiah Will Be The Offspring Of A Woman And Will Crush Satan

A virgin will conceive. This was talking about Mary and we are celebrating the birth of her son, Immanuel. His name means God with us.
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:26-35)
Satan had no idea what God had been planning. He had waited a lifetime for the Messiah and had plans to defeat Him. Jesus’ birth was foretold in Scripture. It was declared by the prophets starting with the very first prophecy delivered by God.

Jesus was sent when “the fullness of the time was come”.
We are at the end of this post and will continue our journey through the prophetic utterances of Jesus’ coming that are found in the Old Testament. It is our prayer that each one of us will come to a greater understanding of what Jesus tought the men on the Emmaus road.
