God has a plan for each of us that was developed before we were even conceived in our mother’s wombs. This does not mean that He controls everything that happens to us or that He does not gives us the freedom to choose to walk in that plan or one of our own making. We have each been given a freewill. If we choose to walk in a plan of our own making it will limit God’s ability to bless us but He will not love us any less. The Holy Spirit will continue to work in our hearts with small nudges to try and move us towards the plan of God.
For as many are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (Romans 8:14)
The Holy Spirit was with God when the plan for our lives was put together. Jesus sent Him to guide us in our journey into the plan of God but we must recognize His presence in our lives. Many Christians think of the Holy Spirit as just an impersonal force but He is a person who wants to have a relationship with each one of us. It will take effort to put our flesh under but we are not alone. The Holy Spirit will guide us step by step, When we miss a step or turn in the wrong direction He will gently nudge us towards the plan of God.
And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; and should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how. For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come. (Mark 4:26-29)
The ground of our hearts will need to be prepared before we will be able to succeed in our journey with the Holy Spirit. We do this by spending time meditating in the Word of God and through prayer. The are no shortcuts and a price will have to be paid if we want to succeed in our journey. Mark said that the harvest would come up “first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear”. The price will be different for each of us. Many have started on this journey but are unable to continue when they see what the price will be. They accept a life far below what God has planned for them. This will not affect God’s love for them. Jesus was sent as a sacrifice for our sins regardless of whether we choose to pay the price to fully surrender or if we are willing to give only a portion of our hearts to Him.
That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. (Hebrews 6:12)
Patience will always play a role in our Christian walk. At the beginning of our journey it will seem that no progress is being made. Our flesh will partner with Satan to fight us each step of the way. Some of us will become discouraged because our focus will be on the natural and we will not perceive the seeds being planted in our spirits from the Word. There will be days that we will quit. This is nothing to become discourage about because it is part of the journey. If we quit one day and then the next start to press into prayer again, we will find the Holy Spirit patiently waiting with open arms. It does not matter to Him if we become discouraged or even fall asleep during our prayer time. This is all a part of our spiritual growth.
We read in Mark 4 that Jesus said that the Word of God is seed and our hearts the ground it is planted in. In this context the heart is referring to our spirits. We plant seed as we spend time meditating in the Word. The more time we spend in meditation, the more seed will be planted. The progress will seem slow when we are just starting out. Seed must be given time to grow but if we will continue in the Word every day there will come a time when we see the blade coming out of the ground. The “suddenly” experiences many people talk about happened after months or even years of planting seed in the ground.
The precious things of God are waiting for us. They are not hidden but we must pursue them. Time will be needed for the seed to grow and produce a harvest. Discouragement will come at the seeming lack of progress but we have to push through and keep planting the seed of God’s Word in our hearts.
