For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (Romans 8:14)
The word translated “sons” in Romans 8:14 does not equate to our English word “child”. It is the Greek word “huios” which is referencing a “person who shares the same nature as”. Christians share the same nature as God and can turn to the Holy Spirit for direction in every area of life. Sons of God should be growing in the things of the Spirit. We should expect to be led by the Spirit of God but if we do not recognize Him as a person who is God then we will not be able to recognize His leadings.
Jesus is the head of the Church but He is represented in the earth by the Holy Spirit. If we do not learn to recognize the Spirit then we are not recognizing Jesus’ headship, We are sons of God and we can be led by the Holy Spirit in every moment of every day if we will learn to look to Him. I’ve heard people say that they are afraid that they’ll miss it or that they cannot hear the voice of God but that is not what the Bible teaches. If our words are not in line with the Word of God then we will not be in line with it. This is why it is so important for each of us to develop the habit of spending time meditating on the Word and giving it careful and considerate thought. It is the written voice of God and the more familiar we are with the Word the more familiar we will be with the Holy Spirit and His promptings.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. (John 10:27-28)
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. (Psalms 37:23)
But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. (1 John 2:20)
The Bible is clear that followers of Jesus will know His voice and have their steps ordered by Him. He is seated at the right Father’s right hand (Mark 16:19). The Holy Spirit was sent to dwell within us and He is the one who conveys Jesus’ direction to us.
